STOCKHOLM, Sweden: Santa may get a little help finding his Swedish chimneys this year as the portable GPS, or the Global Positioning System, was Tuesday named the Nordic country's 2007 top Christmas gift.
The Swedish Research Institute of Trade, which has handed out the 'Christmas Present of the Year' title since 1988, said the small navigation device has evolved from an expensive and complicated tool to a cheap and user-friendly travel buddy.
Jonas Arnberg, an institute analyst, said the gadget 'has now become a component in almost every car. And it's really something that will explode when it comes to mobile phones.'
The trade group said the sale of mapping and navigation devices shot through the roof last year, increasing by 138 percent in Sweden.
Last year's gift of the year was the audio book, which followed the poker set in 2005 and the flat-screen TV in 2004.
The institute also predicted Swedish Christmas sales would rise by about 7.5 percent to 62 million kronor (€6.7 million; US$9.8 million) this year. That would be the highest increase since 1999, it said.
Swedes are expected to spend about 6,800 kronor (€730; US$1,070) each on their Christmas shopping. |
