3/31/08 - Garmin has deal with Google and MapQuestMarch 31, 2008By DAVID HAYES
Your portable GPS and your stodgy old desktop are starting to talk.
Garmin International on Monday announced agreements that allow Global Positioning System users to send data from Google and MapQuest to their Garmin portable navigation devices. “This is part of our ongoing effort to connect Google services like Google Maps with Garmin products,” said Giorgio Scherl, a product manager for Google. The MapQuest agreement allows Garmin customers to send mapping information gathered on a computer through MapQuest to a Garmin portable. Garmin on Monday announced a series of other deals that put GPS mapping on more mobile phones. Garmin Mobile, the company’s phone-based navigation service, will be included as a standard feature on some Samsung mobile phones. Branded Samsung Mobile Navigator by Garmin, the service will be available on Samsung phones sold in Europe this summer. Garmin will be showing off the Samsung i780, Garmin Mobile and other products — including the Garmin Nuvifone — at the CTIA Wireless 2008 trade show, which begins today in Las Vegas. The Nuvifone, a full-featured phone with navigation features, is Garmin’s entry into the mobile phone market. The phone is expected to ship this fall. In another announcement Monday, Garmin said its Garmin Mobile service had been upgraded for smartphones. BlackBerry users and phones with Symbian and Windows Mobile systems can access Google Local. Garmin also said its Garmin Mobile service had been upgraded for BlackBerry phones sold by regional mobile carrier Centennial Communications of New Jersey. In yet another deal, Garmin said a new agreement with nTelos Wireless of Virginia will put Garmin Mobile on that company’s phones. |
